If there were a drug that treated and prevented the chronic diseases that afflict Americans and we didn’t give it to everyone, we’d be withholding a magic pill. If this drug was free, in a country that spends more than $350 billion annually on prescription drugs, where the average 80-year-old takes eight medications, we’d be foolish not to encourage this cheaper and safer alternative as first-line treatment. If every doctor in every country around the world didn’t prescribe this drug for every patient, it might almost be considered medical malpractice. We have that drug today, and it’s safe, free, and readily available.

Exercise has benefits for every body system; it is effective both as a treatment and for prevention of disease. It can improve memory and concentration, lessen sleep disorders, aid heart disease by lowering cholesterol and reducing blood pressure, help sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction, and raise low libido. Exercise does it all. Even with cancer, particularly colon and recurrent breast cancer, the data show clearly that exercise is a deterrent. Newer studies on a glycoprotein called Interleukin 6 suggests that general body inflammation, a factor in almost every chronic disease, is reduced by regular exercise.

não fiquei milionário de novo

A loteria de final de ano não sorteou os números certos novamente. Péssimo serviço. Por falar em serviço ruim, fiquei impressionado com a arrecadação, foram 758 milhões de reais. O prêmio da Megasena da Virada foi de apenas (!) 220 milhões. Entendi que a diferença fica como impostos para o governo. Somando-se este aos outros tantos bilhões que os exímios gestores da coisa pública nos surrupiam todo ano, podia ser um pouquinho melhor o serviço público prestado. Um pouquinho melhor a saúde. Um pouquinho melhor a educação. Um pouquinho melhor a segurança. Um pouquinho melhor os transportes. Bota um pouquinho melhor nisso.

e os americanos vão legalizando a maconha…

O Estado de Nova York deve ser o próximo a legalizar a marijuana. A senadora que apresentou a proposta de legalização e taxação de seu consumo comenta:

“The illegal marijuana economy is alive and well,” she said, “and our unjust laws are branding nonviolent New Yorkers, especially young adults, as criminals, creating a vicious cycle that ruins lives and needlessly wastes taxpayer dollars.”

ser ateu é mais sujeito a preconceito que ser gay

Isso nos USA. Imagine no Brasil!

A recent Gallup poll found (once again) that atheists are the least electable among several underrepresented groups. Sixty-eight percent of Americans would vote for a well-qualified gay or lesbian candidate, for example, but only 54 percent would vote for a well-qualified atheist. Seven state constitutions even still include provisions prohibiting atheists from holding office (though they are not enforced). One of those is liberal Maryland, which also has a clause that says, essentially, that non-believers can be disqualified from serving as jurors or witnesses.

Por que o pessoal da Barra dirige diferente

Quando estou na Barra da Tijuca, na Zona Oeste do Rio, me impressionam os carrões, as SUVs, fazendo barbaridades no trânsito. Um artigo de publicação estrangeira diz que as pessoas tendem a trapacear, a violar regras, dependendo de condições em que se encontram. O estudo identificou que pessoas em carros maiores tendem a praticar mais faltas no trânsito:

When they sit in expansive car seats, which allow them to spread out, instead of constricting them as a tighter seat would, they become more likely to commit a traffic violation during a driving simulation and, in a real-world version, cars with more expansive drivers’ seats were more likely to be illegally double-parked.

Minha dúvida é se os carros (com seus bancos maiores) induzem as pessoas a cometerem transgressões no trânsito ou aqueles que têm personalidade “espaçosa” e não respeitam os direitos dos outros é que gostam de ter carros grandes. Fica a dúvida.
